This Common Chord

“The arrangement was an odd mixture of practicality and sentiment—but then, Julia thought, so was she. So were they all, in their own way.”

“When I was little, I longed to be older, except now I can’t recall what it was that I most keenly anticipated. Being allowed to stay up as late as I wanted? To wear or eat or read whatever I pleased? Well, I could do all those things now, but mostly I don’t — either because I have to get up early for work the next morning, or haven’t enough money to buy the outfit I really love, or for some other boring, grown-up reason. Also, children don’t realise what a huge proportion of adult life is used up worrying about things — from what to make for dinner and whether one’s sheets will get dry in time to make the beds that night, to whether one will ever manage to meet the right man and marry him. Shouldn’t being a grown-up be slightly more exhilarating? Is this the fault of the war? Or is it simply how life is?”

“They must have thought I’d turn out all right, if I kept putting in that much effort. But it’s not enough. It’s never enough…”
I stared back at him, into those dark eyes that were so like Veronica’s, yet so shadowed, so wretchedly unhappy. For a moment I could almost have believed he’d done this on purpose, in some desperate attempt to escape his miserable situation.

For today is the anniversary of the day we left Montmaray - a year ago, exactly, that we watched our home being destroyed. But why should anniversaries be so significant? Why should a year hurt more than eleven months or thirteen months or thirty-seven? Surely I could choose how I felt and when I felt it. I took a deep breath.
